How about Hugh Dowding, for fielding Fighter Command with such skill as to defeat the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain?

If the RAF was soundly beaten, there was a good chance that Great Britain would have been forced to surrender, for a number of reasons.

Anyone want to run  with this??

I would argue that Wellington is a greater figure than Nelson, he was the architect and winner of the Peninsular War and also defeated the master himself at Waterloo at the end of the Hundred Days.

I could be a troll here and say Montgomerie is Britain's greatest military figure, but the only one who would agree with me would be Monty himself.
