Britain's naval hero, Lord Nelson, was picked as the top military hero in a survey:

Nelson voted greatest British military hero of all time

Britain has had quite a history of military leaders, so it's interesting to see the figures who were chosen.  Click on the link above and at the bottom of the article you'll find other military figures who received some votes.

Nice to see that "Bomber" Harris made the list.

How about Hugh Dowding, for fielding Fighter Command with such skill as to defeat the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain?

If the RAF was soundly beaten, there was a good chance that Great Britain would have been forced to surrender, for a number of reasons.

Anyone want to run  with this??

I would argue that Wellington is a greater figure than Nelson, he was the architect and winner of the Peninsular War and also defeated the master himself at Waterloo at the end of the Hundred Days.

I could be a troll here and say Montgomerie is Britain's greatest military figure, but the only one who would agree with me would be Monty himself. Smiley
