During the war between the states there was no Medal of honor in the south because of finacial considerations. On july 1, 1896 LT Gen stephen d. Lee (Confederate) addressed a group of veterans and southerners calling for a group to be formed to present the true history of the southern soldeir and to honor them. Not until 1977 was the first CMOH issued; to a private; Samuel Davis of Colmans scouts.Nathan Bedford Forrest, John Mosby, Wade Hampton have all received the Honor. Lee, Longstreet, Stuart, Hill, Jackson. are conspicuously not on the list.Captain Henry Wirz, the commandant of Andersonville prison, the only man in the civil war to be tried for war crimes, is on that list.
You have to remember that Nathan Bedford Forrest started the KKK so maybe that has something to do with it. 😉
True. I am not familiar with all the names, but I do wonder at some on he list. and about some that arnt. The entire crew of the Hunley is on the list.
