Here is an interesting list of New World colonies that have failed. I did not know that the Spanish had attempted to plant a colocy in the Chesapeake Bay that was wiped out by the local Indians.
I just found it interesting that the Spanish went so far north. I always thought they did not go north of Florida.
They were perhaps the first European power to colonize the Americas, it's just that they weren't the most successful. The British were better because they were able to learn from their mistakes and adapt.
I am definitely not a scholar of North American colonization patterns. ;D
I didn't know that, either, so it's kind of interesting to read about. Makes me wonder how many visible signs of Spanish exploration are still extant in the East north of Florida (town names, rivers, etc.).
