On Jan 1 ,1942 the Rose Bowl was played in Durham NC. There were fears that the West Coast was going to be bombed or invaded and they wanted to avoid large concentrations of people in one location. Oregon St. won the Rose Bowl title that year with a 20-16 victory over Duke.

That is interesting and not only because Duke's football team evidently was once good enough to play in a national bowl game. 😀 Actually I recall that the Japanese were developing bombers that could fly high enough to evade our fighters by the very end of the war, but I don't believe they were ever put to use. I wonder if there was a real threat of of bombing on the West Coast during those earlier years of the war.
