The answer to “Who really discovered America?” depends on the definition of discover.According to the American Heritage on-line dictionary the word discover comes from the Middle English discoveren meaning to reveal.  The oldest definition of discover is to reveal or expose.Others?Vikings, Chinese, etc.?probably arrived in the Americas before Columbus, but their arrival was either forgotten or hidden.   Probably because anciently information of commercial value was treated much like trade secrets are today. While others may have arrived in the Americas before Columbus none revealed the existence of this land to non-inhabitants in an enduring manner.  Columbus did.   His voyages changed the course of history.   Travel, trade, migration, etc. were forever changed.  In fact?for good or ill?during the last millennia few men, if any, have had a greater impact on the direction in which history unfolded. So, while it may not be fashionable, I think it is fair to credit Columbus with discovering America.

Well the Vinland Sagas are the text that started the chase to confirm that Leif Erikson made his way to Newfoundland.  Some archeology places a short termed settlement there.  Now realize that there may have been rumor that America did exit when C2 decited to make his voyage.  I'll bet he hoped that the landmass did not extend that far south as it would (and did) impede his trip to the Far East!

Did Christophe Colombus really discover America. There must of been others before him the vikings or maybe the chinese from the other side of the world. ❓

Ok i am only 13 but i know it was named after Amerigo Vesspuci

Where I live it is generally held that the place was called after a Bristol Merchant called Ap Meurig, a name the Bristolians, not a well educated people, pronounced as Americ.  It is also contended that amongst the fairly numerous persons who managed to bump into the Continent it was our Prince Madoc.  Once you realize that the Church forced all Europeans to eat fish on Fridays, it becomes obvious that no discoverer in his right mind would pass on the news of the incredibly rich shoals off Newfoundland to anyone else.    How they must have cursed that Italian clown!  Madoc was half Viking, but there was, for a long time, a sort of industry devoted to looking for native Americans who spoke our language, Cymraeg, since he was said to have taken  a lot of our people with him  They settled finally on the Mandan tribe, who conveniently more-or-less died out and lost their language.    I'd guess that, as in so many such cases, the 'discoverer' was whichever show-off wanted to make his name.

Ah! The arrogance of the Welsh, Celts, Scots, etc.  What is it about England that makes all the people there crazy about whatever tribal heritage they have and invest so much in proving their importance to world history?  I recently saw a book in the states entitled: How the Scots invented the Modern World, That is what I call arrogance.  Now you are making the claim that it was Welsh who named America through their bastardized pronunciation of a Bristol merchant?  Come on, you are just pulling our leg right?

I have read the book, it is garbage, I should have been more clear.  I got it from the library.  All this just points to the revival of tribalism in the modern world.  It almost makes me think that people are afraid to face the challenges of living in modern society and long for some mythical simpler time when all they had to do was live to see the next day and if they were lucky they would live to the ripe old age of 35.  It is much akin to the myth of the NOBLE SAVAGE who, while certainly SAVAGE was anything but NOBLE.

So are you saying globalism is better for democracy than tribalism?

I am not advocating anything, just commenting on a trend I think is appearing and becoming more prevalent.

The Scots did invent the modern world, obviously, and the 'Welsh' were the first people to suffer from industrial capitalism, which is why we are poorer and sicker than most Europeans.  I don't know much about England except that it is flat and easily conquered, but I do know that the Celts were a people who lived in southern Gaul in Roman days.  How could I conceivably pull the leg of people with such a well-known sense of irony as the Americans, Duw duw?

The first group of Asiatic hunters that followed their “groceries” across the land bridge formed in the days of global cooling. Pretty simple, eh?

I would even call it Wales if the Welsh hadnt been conquered almost 1,000 years ago.  I seriously doubt there is anyone in western England who can claim an unsullied Welsh bloodline.  I am certain my English mother's folks took care of that long ago.  I too, have seen Braveheart and know what the English did to pacify the country ;D

I have no idea how those Polynesians supposedly sailed across open ocean to South America. Vanuatu, from “Seven Daughters of Eve”, a good read, claims much of Polynesia was mixed racially, some from Austra. and some from Southern China. I'm going to dig out my copy to be precise, DNA studies revealed Polynesian links to So. Americans.[flash=200,200][/fhttp://www.familytreemagazine.com/article/gene-in-genealogy/lash][flash=200,200][/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Sykesflash]B.Sykes is the Geneticist you refer to Phillipedes, I believe.

Cymru remains Cymru and has its own somewhat limited government.  Why not call it Rome?  I'm sorry you regard the english as so sullied, but do not otherwise understand your thinking.  I hope it is clearer to you.

Sorry,  I cant resist pulling a Welshman's leg.  The Welsh and Scottish along with the Hispanics of the American southwest tickle with their calls for autonomy or in the Hispanics case, calls for independence.  They also strike me as being somewhat like Don Quiyote, that is, tilting at windmills.
