Ancient mass grave found on Olympics siteA mass grave dating to Roman times has been discovered during construction of facilities for the London Olympics. I am curious if they will come up with enough evidence to deduce the definitive reason all these bodies were buried together. The find is not really historic unless the archaeologists can help provide context, otherwise it is just a mass grave like any other mass grave.How much you want to bet they will organize an elaborate re-interment ceremony when the remains have been studied? It will probably include all kinds of pious pseudo-pagan platitudes about honoring the unknown dead of their ancestors or some such.Still, an interesting find.
I find the modern fad of re-interring ancient remains with ceremonies supposedly packed with meaning funny, yes. I think the ceremonies are false and represent false emotion. It is kind of like the court fight in Washington over Kennewick Man. Some Indian Tribes claimed he was an ancestor but how can they prove their claim for remains that are anywhere from 5,000-9,000 years old? I agree that human remains should be treated with respect, a skull or other remians do not belong on someones desk. However, in my book coming up with elaborate ceremonies to honor unknown dead from hundreds or thousands of years ago is more spectacle than respect. Simply re-interring remains when study is complete is respectful enough in my opinion. Wallowing in supposed righteousness about how much the “ancestors” have been honored is both disrespectful and morally suspect.

Religion has nothing to do with it. Who is served by the spectacle of elaborate ceremony? What is proved? I question the sincerity of groups that make a huge deal out of stuff like this. Because my impression is that the ceremony is not about those being re-interred but rather about those doing the interring. It is form over substance.
