I dont know if anybody has heard of this but Polish police arrested the men that stole the “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign from Auschwitz last week.  Polish police retrieve damaged Auschwitz gate sign  They havent speculated on a motive but I have to wonder why they would steal it in the first place.  Apparently the sign had been cut into three pieces.  I hope the people that took it get lost of time in jail to reflect on their actions.

I think it's like anything that people take these days that they shouldn't.  Why do people steal stop signs, or the Baby Jesus from outdoor creche scenes?  I think it's either on the level of a prank or juvenile desire to disrespect that which other people take seriously.I realize that taking the sign was bad, and that there's much added importance because the site was one of the Jewish holocaust.  Still, I wonder why it made the news around the world and why it became an international “event”.  Surely, even greater disrespect goes on toward other religious beliefs that barely gets noticed.  So why here?

ฺBecause Auschwitz became “The Symbol” of Nazism. Its real implications towards its ideology and those who still try to justify it. Even if those men were not born at that time, they perfectly knew what they were doing, “Arbeit Macht Frei” is not just a piece of steel. What is your:

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the sign was at Auschwitz.  If any place is symbolic of Genocide, Auschwitz is the place.  It is kind of the same as if someone had stolen headstones from a cemetery.  It is a defilement of a sacred place.  Auschwitz is one great big cemetery and to defile it so is something unthinkable.  I can understand the outcry, even agree with it.  The sad part is that when things like this happen elsewhere there is no outcry, I think there should be.

The best thing is the men forgot to cut off the last letter. They stole only “Arbeit macht Fre”Our media told this soon after the men were captured. That's the best proof those poor men didn't even realize what they were stealing.

That they were that stupid makes it worse in a way doesn't it?

True. Another ridiculous thing is the payment which was given to them by Mr Hogstrom. It was said to be 6 thousand zlotys per each man = 2000 dollars
