My parents have an Emerson freezer at their house which they got when my grandmother moved out of her house, I believe sometime in the mid-1980s. When my parents got it, it was already about 40 years old. So basically my parents have a 70-year old freezer in their basement which continues to operate nicely to this day. Questions that come to mind: is there an ordinary shelf-life for such appliances? How long would one last that was built in 2011? I'm assuming the old model is not nearly as “green” as they come today, and I wonder what kind of energy that thing sucks out compared to the modern models.

I would imagine it is an energy guzzler compared to modern models. My dad recently retired a refrigerator that my grandmother bought in the 50's. He said there was a noticable difference on his electrice bill. On the other hand my dad and grandparents certainly got their money's worth out of the appliance, the same can probably be said about your parents and grandparents. My dad only retired his fridge because he said he stopped using it as there are only two people at home now and it was in the garage. IT still works and he put it in the barn covered in case he needs it again later.
