Ok, I actually answered this in another thread but I figured I'd put it by itself as a poll.  Answer first then find my other message and see if you are correct.

Is Cornwall a country, or a part of England? It has its own flag.

I guess I'm not one of the “usual suspects” (at least not yet  ;D) — although I concentrated my BA in History on British history, that was 24 years ago!

Ok then, can anyone tack on the other places that made up the British Empire?

Is “The rest of the world” an acceptable answer.

Australia, India, America, and mst of sub-Saharan Africa leap immediately to mind.  As well as extensive Island posessions in all the world's oceans.

How much of China (aside from Hong Kong) did they ever control, and was there any of Japan?

I'm going to take a guess and say none of China. (unless you want to say they “controlled” China with opium)

Hong Kong was a territory of the UK from 1842 to 1997.

British troops (with the help of French troops, I believe) ransacked the Chinese imperial garden in 1860 as payback for the emperor's resistance to releasing British hostages in 1860.  It is still considered a point of national disgrace by China.
