KeymasterSure, you go to Google Gadgets. There are a few Civil War ones that you can put on your site. Look here:http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=open&hl=en&gl=&q=civil+warThe “today in history” one is the seventh on the list. Just follow the directions listed and it should be easy to put on your site.

That's actually a cool story. I wonder if the people who cracked the code relied on historical information on how codes were produced during the Civil War, or if they deciphered it on its own.

The code is called the “Vigenere cipher”, a centuries-old encryption in which letters of the alphabet are shifted a set number of places so an 'a' would become a 'd' ~ essentially, creating words with different letter combinations. The code was widely used by Southern forces during the Civil War, according to Civil War Times Illustrated.http://www.thestatesman.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=353593&catid=37 http://www.simonsingh.net/The_Black_Chamber/vigenere_cracking.html

Participant1861 – In Charleston Harbor, Union Major Robert Anderson and 76 of his men surrended Fort Sumter to the Confederates under General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard. The first engagement of the war ended in a Rebel victory. A few days ago was there anniversary.
