    One wonders why this idea faded from history until it was revived in the twentieth century.

    I am guessing they were not popular clothing articles.  Perhaps they were very uncomfortable and that is why the idea faded or some strange religious objection.

    I was just kind of joking with that photo….the discussion made me think of that mosaic from Piazza Armerina.  It's the earliest such example of similar clothing that I am aware of.
