I might put John Cabot in here.  He was sailing in the late 15th century and undertaking a mission with no certain end.

Henry the Navigator.  His exploits were directly responsible for the exponential growth of Portugese power in the 16th century.

Magellan is the man in terms of mileage, but Columbus is the man in terms of greatest impact.  Pizarro and Cortes are a close third/fourth.  Honorable mention would be John Rolfe and Sir Walter Raleigh.

I like Cabrillo; sailed the length of the west coast and finding little to recommend it claimed it all for the Crown anyway… got the land of fruits and nuts.  😉

The greatest explorer ? Homo Sapiens : a fragile creature without claw nor fang that had to rely on his brain only and eventually conquered the Earth: you and me.  😉
