I'd have to agree with Donald regarding Anne Frank, in particular.

I have said for years that it is ironic that I have to have a license to go fishing but any idiot can have a baby.  Yet we are still surprised when idiot parents or grandparents do stupid things.

Have you and my husband been talking to one another?? That's the exact thing he's said with each “dumb-parent/grandparent-stupid-people-trick” report… ;D

Phid – Fortunately, my parents are still alive. Dad was born in 1927 and my mother in 1931. Both agree with you. Tremendous changes occurred in the time period you named.

Lmao, Donald…yeah, I'm a Hoosier. The good points are: the Indy 500, the Brickyard, Hoosier cantalope & white sweet corn in the summer; the bad points: our dern winters!!! I absolutely detest ice and snow…am trying to convince the spouse that Arizona is a lovely state all year around…

I'll take your Indiana winter and trade you our NE PA winter 😉

okie dokie, I'll take your NE PA snow and trade you our ice AND our tornadoes in the spring & summer. The heat in AZ doesn't bother me that much; we've been there several times visiting my aunt. Because the humidity is much lower there than in Indiana, I think that's why I like it. Plus, I love being able to visit mountains and the desert all in one day. Indiana certainly doesn't offer that difference in scenery.

I visit a very large and extremely popular online history forum, often. Members there seem to enjoy the bashing of others constantly. Though I enjoy reading a few of the postings and try to take away some sort of education from the more knowledgable posters, the criticism and bashing reminds me that there are many adults who haven't really matured past the junior high school age. HF is a good example of this, IMO. On that particular forum, I never post; just read due to a poster who seemed to be very bothered that I was just a “newbie” therefore my post wasn't worthy of an answer. Hopefully, since this forum is smaller and the majority of posters know what to expect from HF, he won't chase away others.

I don't live in Florida but the woman arrested is originally from Indiana, I guess. She made the evening news up here big-time with that connection. Even the broadcaster reading the story had a “what the heck” look on her face.

scout, where in Germany are you located? I apologize if you've already stated this info but I haven't found it, yet…my cousins live in Salzgitter-Ringelheim and my grandfather was born in Beinum…nancy

I'm chuckling at scout's use of “every village needs an idiot”…my office has an idiot, per se. She giggles at everything which is not only annoying but very unprofessional. HF's ramblings aren't as bothersome now that I know to expect them whenever I see his name…

Our heat, water and cooking is strictly by propane. When we built our house, propane was not only efficient but economical. I grew up with gas stoves and gas heat so I didn't want to switch when this house was built. Now, after our last tank fill (over $900) I'd take that Medieval Hungarian Stove in a “New York Minute”.

I agree with you on both accounts. The owners have probably geared it towards tourists but knowing the history of the Stasi, the bar is a tasteless statement, IMO.

Recently I finished the book, Hitler's Willing Executioners, and am currently reading, Auschwitz, A New History the authors of both books point out among many reasons for the failure of Operation Barbarossa that Hitler's use of the rail system for not only transporting troops but the transportation of Jews, Gypsies, Poles, etc., east caused a strain on the rail system.
