Just watched a show last night on History channel that makes the claim the Hyskos were the Jews.  Something with the timing of a volcano/the plagues of Egypt/crossing the Red Sea. (the claim was standard consensus has it off by about 100 yrs or so)  Don't know if it makes any sense, but it was interesting.

I'm going to add some possible controversy.  ;DThe Muslims, especially under the Abbasid Dynasty, are perhaps what made the Dark Ages not so dark too.  It was they who had the most libraries and the largest (outside of Constantinople) cities…Baghdad, Cordoba, Cairo.  They made advances in mathematics, geography (which became very valuable to Western sailors and merchants) and the natural sciences, preserved (and translated to Arabic and Latin) ancient texts, they made books using paper (that they got through trade with China), and made discoveries in astronomy and medicine (Ibn Sina, known as Avicenna to the West, discovered contagious diseases and how they can be spread by contminated water…pretty important thing to know back then IMO).They developed the astrolabe, which later made it possible for Europeans to sail to the Americas. If I'm incorrect about this, then educate me. But from what I see, they contributed and assimilated to society at that time.

Gunbroker has a thread about this.  Just goes to show that being stuck on Right wing is almost as bad as being Leftist.  (wonder if the posters there actually read what he said instead of just accusing him of being some dumb celebrity  🙂

I just read about the herbal medicines used during these times. Even anesthesia was used for major surgeries (like amputations  :o).  There's some recipes for baldness and indigestion if anyone's interested.  Let me know if it works for you, cause I ain't trying it!  ;DFunny thing, my book doesn't even refer to these times as the Dark Ages.  I wonder why they were ever called that.  It seemed pretty lively and as Phid said, a lot of preservation in writing and emphasis on education.  Was this the time of the first books?

This is getting more and more interesting.  This is why Rome is such a great place – so much of Western Civilization links back to this very city.

Yeah, including all the scandals and aristocracy.

I don't really like singers whose largest fan base is old ladies, but has anyone ever heard Josh Groban's version of O Holy Night?  It's really good! Here's a link to listen online.http://sami711.vox.com/library/audio/6a00c22526f03b549d00cd970313fb4cd5.html

Have any of y'all heard of The Citation Machine?I haven't tried it professionally yet, but it looks pretty good.  Not sure if it follows regulations to the letter of the law.Busy weekend (quiz, midterm, paper, and Christmas shopping. oy)  So if I don't happen to get around the boards too much,  you all have a very nice and Merry Christmas!

Subscribed (and referral given).Phid, do you have any troubles with the citation “cheat”?  I try it, says it's supposed to download, but never does. (this is at work, maybe my home computer with all the latest IE stuff will work)

Instead of having two entries in the bibliography, put the latest date accessed for both citations. (since you're there, you'd want to double check that first one anyway, right?).

I will say you referred me if I use it.  Will have to check the free trial (I wonder if it's full access).  Do me a favor when you have time.  Is there a good amount of information about Cyrus the Great?  If so, that's a good sign because there isn't much info in general about him out there. I may just join for a month or two and try it out.  There aren't really any good history/humanity source libraries at my school (well, except military history stuff)

Has anyone ever heard of Proquest?  I wonder if Questia is similar.
