Once the EMP strikes, there won't be any more forum anyway, right?

Funny you mention that since I am currently reading a sci-fi trilogy where that is exactly what happens.

It seems to be an almost mandatory event in the typical modern doomsday scenario.  I'm guessing it's attractive as part of doomsday writing simply because of the obvious reliance society has on electronics, and the seeming inability for people to survive using basis skills without a cell phone or electric can opener.

I think EMP is so popular in fiction because it is so hard to defend against.

Do they exist in real life with the kind of potential we see in fiction?  What would the range of a single EMP have?  Would it be the kind of thing where a small section of a large city might be knocked out, or where planes would be falling out of the sky?

As I understand it, an EMP device is relatively easy to build and with nuclear weapons their effects can be very widespread indeed.  Think of a strong solar flare exponentially increased in power and concentrated in time.  Solar Flares cause disruptions all the time, I often notice them with satellite reception and check the NASA space weather site when I think I am being affected by one.  Even solar flares can knock out power lines.  The biggest problem in defending against such a device is that while electronic equipment can be shielded, the shielding is bulky and increased shielding increases in size logarithmically while EMP strength increases exponentially so shielding is both very expensive and very impractical because it is so easy to defeat by simply increasing the yield of an EMP device.

I have another request/notice.  I would like to move some of the posts from the Roman Senate to the General Discussion (politics) area.  I realize this might be a thorny issue, which is why I wanted to put it forth here first.  The Roman Senate Chambers is a place that is “private” from the prying eyes of Google or the occasional passer-by, and perhaps you spoke more freely in a thread there because you knew it would not be picked up.  At the same time, I think we have some nice discussions there that may benefit the populace, and even attract more visitors to WCF.  With that in mind, I want to move some of those better threads to the Gen Discussion area.  However, if I transfer a thread and you object to it being transferred, please notify me and I will see what I can do to remedy the problem.  I don't want you to feel uncomfortable speaking your minds here.

I'm against the idea.  I think what is said in the Senate Chambers should stay in the Senate Chambers.

Even if your wisdom, espoused in such private threads, could lead some lost sheep in the ways of historical and political analysis?  And also, how are the historians of the 22nd century supposed to find archival material on “DonaldBaker” unless we make the information publicly available to them? 😉

    I don't have a problem with it.

My wisdom is so valuable that if I made it public, it would immediately be devalued.  Just be thankful I don't levy a charge. 🙂
