Macon, Georgia will soon be celebrating their 200th year. Originally the first settlement was on the Eastern side of the Ocmulgee River. The Western side was the Creek Nation. A blockhouse and fort were built. The fort was named Fort Hawkins after the Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins. Just recently the original cannon from Fort Hawkins was found in Kentucky and returned to Fort Hawkins. The following article is from the Macon Telegraphhttp://www.macon.com/198/story/54741.htmlEventually a group of toughs moved across the river and settled an area called Tigertown after their leader "Tiger" Jones. The majority of the town eventually moved across the river. I grew up on the SW side of town and it was and is still kind of rough.
So the “unknown Macon resident” who had it for all those years….they don't say who took it after the fort was abandoned.
I heard that the cannon was in the Pleasant Hill area of town for many years. That is a primarily Black neighborhood. Don't know how it got there
