That map actually tells us nothing except the relative abundance provided by food production at the specified date. It is a neat intellectual exercise but is devoid of any larger meaning.
Hmmmm….I thought the larger meaning was simply the relative population of countries at 1 A.D., as illustrated by country size. 😉
