Last night a I watched a documentary on CSPAN about the history of the White House. It was really interesting and it seems that the place has a lot of neat stories associated with it. One thing I found interesting was that Truman had the White House gutted, up to its exterior walls, and fitted with steel. They showed some photos of how invasive the digging was (you can see some photos here).
I remember when Truman was renovating the White House. They played recordings of the creaking and groaning of the timbers for us at school
